Training and competing philosophy at the University of Georgia Jumps and Combined events program.

Championship season! Finally, we get to get invited to the track and field ‘prom’! lol Coaches and athletes have been waiting for this time all year long. Talking and promises vanish and time to walk the walk is before our eyes! One aspect of track and field I love is that you cannot ‘hide’ behind another player or a defensive line, midfielders, etc. As my father in law (former professional soccer coach in Europe) said ‘athletes gotta be athletes not just players’! This is the pinnacle of high output physical conditioning and human spirit! Track and field post season- championship season! Here at UGA we try to do our best to be prepared for this season even though we are in a major disadvantage due to lack of an indoor track (coming soon though!). However, we can’t cry about it but find ways to overcome the freezing temperatures. All my athletes embraced the fact that it is what it is and find ways to get prepared for the worse!

Going in to the SEC battle this next weekend our group looks to enter the competition and have fun at this high level meet. Myself as a coach I try to do my best to fine-tune them and provide with an opportunity to enjoy the outcome of hard work. This is, after all the essence of high-level production in track and field…you get what you put in. Competition does not matter as the best might win. We will lose some we will win some. This is just how it goes!

The multi group shows consistency and we are hoping to continue to do so in the next 2-4 weeks. In order to reach Elite status at the NCAA and World level our athletes (Uibo, Scantling, Williams, Williams, Chapman, Johnson) must understand how this combined thing works. Take one event at a time, evaluate and give it all you have! If goes well great if not, shake it off, move on and have a short-term memory.

Our jumps crew (Leleux, Kallenou, Gusin, Orji) also understands the demands of the Elite status. It only gets harder when you are going for a height or distance and thinking about it too much! This is a very young group that wants to be great. It is my job to try and ‘prolong’ their careers at he Word stage by monitoring and shaping their day-to-day activities and mental status. We are all good technical coaches but the difference-making ones are the ones that understand the athlete and provide fuel for a long lasting career! I am still trying to find the happy medium and give my athletes the best of my ability so they are happy and enjoy what they do best!
