NEW ORLEANS – Conference championships performances have tightened the packs atop both the men’s and women’s Division I U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Team Computer Rankings, released Tuesday. Bests The Florida men and Kansas women both remain atop their respective rankings, but the chase pack is beginning to reel them in as the collegiate track & field season enters its homestretch. The No. 2 Texas A&M men lost some ground on the Florida men, but Oregon and Arkansas were propelled by conference championships to the No. 3 and 4 spots, respectively. The No. 2 Texas A&M women won the SEC crown in their first season of membership in the conference to draw closer to their former Big 12 rivals at No. 1, while the Oregon women made a big jump with their conference title to No. 3. Oregon, Arkansas Men Ride Conference Title Momentum Toward the Top What was a two-horse race for the No. 1 spot last week has gained a pair of competitors, with No. 3 Oregon and No. 4 Arkansas climbing the rankings to join No. 1 Florida and No. 2 Texas A&M. The Gators and Aggies lost out to NCAA indoor champ Arkansas for the SEC outdoor title, while Oregon’s Pac-12 crown put them within striking distance of the top two. Florida, which finished runner-up to Arkansas for the SEC title, dropped 4.67 net points for a team score of 314.46, while third-place Texas A&M fell 13.28 to 300.07. The Razorbacks turned in six top-10 marks to jump 27.02 points to No. 4 with a team score of 246.83. At the Pac-12 Championships Oregon posted four top-10 performances for a 38.38 net point gain to 275.51 — fewer than 25 points back of Texas A&M at No. 2 and within 40 of the top-ranked Gators. Oregon’s drive was powered by strong performances revolving around the 400. Defending outdoor 400 champ Mike Berry moving from 11th to fourth in the 2013 event rankings with a 45.14, though he didn’t claim the 400 Pac-12 title in losing to collegiate leader Bryshon Nellum of USC. Top ranked 110 hurdler Jonathan Cabral also ran the 400 hurdles for the first time this season, checking in at No. 8 in the national rankings with a 50.50. Berry later ran a leg of the 4×400 relay that moved from 15 to 10 with a 3:05.63. Hammer thrower Greg Skipper also contributed with his 222-6 (67.81m) effort that moved him from No. 10 to No. 6. The quarter mile was also a big factor in Arkansas’ jump in the rankings. Akheem Gauntlett moved from No. 17 to No. 8 in the open 400 with a 45.53, while hurdler Caleb Cross jumped from 13th to seventh in the 400 hurdles with a title-winning 50.42. Gauntlett anchored the 4×400 relay that moved from No. 21 to No. 7 with a 3:04.68. Leoman Momoh’s 1:47.74 en route to an individual 800 title moved him from unranked to No. 9. Florida State rounded out the top five, dropping two spots after being displaced by Oregon and Arkansas with a 224.45 team score. The biggest conference championships boost came from California, which jumped 26 spots to No. 18. Oregon Women Pull Back into the Race for No. 1 Just as No. 1 Kansas pulled out to a big lead in the rankings after a Big 12 title last week, No. 2 Texas A&M and new No. 3 Oregon jumped back toward the top with SEC and Pac-12 titles, respectively, this week. A handful of Jayhawks were able to improve upon some top-five marks, but ultimately Kansas dropped 21.59 net points for a team score of 330.02. Texas A&M, despite the SEC crown, slid 5.04 net points to 302.40. The Aggies’ weekend was highlighted by Kamaria Brown’s season’s best of 52.10 at 400 meters, along with Jennifer Madu jumping from No. 44 to No. 14 in the triple jump with a mark of 42-9½ (13.04m). Ashton Purvis moving from No. 17 to No. 14 at 200 meters with a season’s best 23.07 (+1.3m/s) also helped the Aggies stay relatively stable in the rankings. Oregon was the biggest gainer of the weekend, soaring four spots to No. 3 with a 62.59 net gain to 270.21. Sticking with the 400-meter theme, Phyllis Francis claimed the national lead at 51.57 to improve from No. 12 last week, while Chizoba Okodogbe went from unranked to No. 9 with a 52.22. English Gardner jumped from No. 30 to No. 5 at 200 with a winning 22.62 (+1.1m/s). Also key in the move up the rankings was hammer thrower Jillian Weir improved from No. 33 to No. 13 with a 212-3 (64.70m). LSU stayed pat at No. 4, gaining a marginal 3.53 net points for a 240.94 team score following a close runner-up finish to the Aggies at the SEC meet. Florida, which finished fourth at the SEC Championships, slid two spots to No. 5 following a 26.66 net loss for a team score of 228.78. Illinois State saw the biggest improvement in their ranking of any top-25 team, leaping 14 spots to No. 25.
