WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A once yearbook manufacturing facility in Winston-Salem is now an indoor track and field facility that’s proving to be an economic engine for the city.

The J.D.L. Fast Track on Kimwell Drive in Winston-Salem as recently picked as the site for the 2014 N.C.A.A. Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Tourism officials say that event alone will bring more than 2,000 people to town and pump nearly $600,000 into the local economy.

Track Manager Craig Longhurst says the facility is unlike any other in the state.

“It’s a 200 meter flat track, the surface is Mondo which is the surface they used for Olympics in London this year. This is state of the art top of line running surface,” says Longhurst.

Because teams can host practices or full scale meets with room for nearly 2,000 spectators it is different than other indoor tracks.
