38-Year-Old High Jump Record Goes Down At Duel In The Desert

Published by ASU SID on May 2, 2015

TEMPE, Ariz.— Arizona State’s 38-year-old school record in the high jump was surpassed on Saturday when redshirt senior Bryan McBride cleared 2.30m (7-6.50) as the Sun Devils hosted the 2015 Duel In The Desert at Sun Angel Stadium.

“It’s a broken record almost, Bryan McBride, jumping 2.30m, 7.51m in the long jump, taking second in the triple jump, Shelby Houlihan having an outstanding double in the 1500m and the 3000m,” Director of Track and Field Greg Kraft said. “But for our team, Jamol James was a big deal today. 10.15 is a big deal. We have to be more than our stars, and today we really were.”

A local product out of Peoria, Ariz., McBride, cleared the best bar in program history to close out his home meet career, making it on his second attempt, and then decided to close out his day with the make. Kyle Arney set the original record in 1977 at 2.29m (7-6.00), which McBride matched last week at the Drake Relays.
