Cross Country Tabbed to Sweep MW Titles

Published by New Mexico SID on August 19, 2015

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The University of New Mexico men's and women's cross-country teams were selected as the favorites to win their respective 2015 Mountain West cross-country titles, as voted by the league's coaches.

The vote, released Wednesday, marks the fifth straight year both teams were picked in the preseason poll to sweep the conference championships. The women's squad have won seven consecutive conference titles, while the men have won six years in a row.

"It's a great honor to earn this honor in one of the best cross-country leagues in the country," New Mexico head coach Joe Franklin said. "It's a long time to the conference championships and there are many teams that are highly competitive and can place high at the national level."

The New Mexico women captured the top spot in the preseason poll by earning 100 points and 10 of the 11 first-place votes. The women, who placed a program-record third at the 2014 NCAA Championships, return cross-country All-American Alice Wright and track All-American Calli Thackery, while adding a number of key transfers, including Rhona Auckland and Courtney Frerichs.

The Boise State women scored the other first-place vote and 88 total points to place second, while Colorado State and Wyoming registered 79 total points apiece en route to sharing third. Air Force (58 points), Nevada (52), Utah State (49), Fresno State (36), UNLV (25), San José State (21) and San Diego State (18) claimed fifth place through 11th, respectively.

On the men's side, the Lobos tallied five of the eight first-place votes and 46 points total to earn the top position in the men's poll. The men bring back All-MW runner Elmar Engholm and add a number of new faces after graduating most of their top five from last year.
