Cross Country Opens 2015 Season at Notre Dame - The University of New Mexico LobosPublished by
Cross Country Opens 2015 Season at Notre DamePublished by New Mexico SID on September 30, 2015 Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational — Notre Dame, Ind. New Mexico has the nation's top-ranked women's cross country team and the 17th-ranked men's team. It has all sorts of expectations and has received tons of attention to start the season. And, on Tuesday, the Lobos got their running spikes — just in time to open the season. The University of New Mexico cross country program opens up its 2015 campaign in earnest Friday at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational as the Lobos put their lofty preseason accolades and rankings to the test. The Lobos, heading to Notre Dame for the eighth-straight year under head coach Joe Franklin, have their eyes set on picking up some wins as they aim to bolster their credentials for the 2015 NCAA Championships in November. "It's the start of our new year, with the goal always to be in contention for a Mountain West title and in contention to make the national championship," Franklin said. "We have a great group." After racing in essentially a preseason competition on Sept. 4 (meets before Sept. 25 don't count toward NCAA selections), the Lobos are finally making their highly anticipated debut. One of just 11 institutions with both its men's and women's team ranked in the top 20 of the most recent USTFCCCA National Coaches' poll, UNM is starting its quite literal run toward the NCAAs on the Burke Golf Course in Notre Dame, Ind. This meet, which starts a seven to eight week season for the Lobos, is one of the first tests Franklin's harriers will face. "You got to go out and run and you got to have fun and enjoy it because it's going to be stressful," Franklin said. "We haven't been in that environment a while." But New Mexico had success in such an environment last year, as the women won the 2014 Notre Dame Invitational and the men placed third. Both those performances served a running starts for the Lobos as they tore through the Mountain West for a sixth-straight title sweep and into the NCAAs for the sixth year in the row. That trend has a strong chance of continuing Friday, especially for the women's team that — for the first time this season — is the consensus No. 1 team in the nation. "It's nice to be honored [as No. 1], but we haven't run a step yet," Franklin said. "Our first race is this weekend and we go with a very strong, talented group of women." Leading the women will be the foursome of high-caliber runners that features veterans Alice Wright and Calli Thackery, UMKC transfer Courtney Frerichs and UK import Rhona Auckland. The women's team, which is so deep it can afford to rest some runners and redshirt New Mexico prep star Natasha Bernal, has a number of runners vying for that final scoring position on the team. Contenders for that final spot in the scoring five are Lindsey Andrews, Molly Renfer, Whitney Thornburg, Sophie Connor and Kendall Kelly. "We have a good group, a deep group," Franklin said. "... We're going to go there with it the goal to run hard and do the best we can." The men also have the goal of doing the best they can, and will look to Elmar Engholm and Graham Thomas to anchor them. Engholm, an exceptional miler looking for a breakthrough on the grass, is the frontrunner for the men heading to Notre Dame, but Thomas, out of Dulce, N.M., has shined the last two years at Notre Dame. "We don't return a lot from last year," Franklin said about the men, "but we have guys that are running really well. Graham Thomas is one that sticks out. He's exceptional right now. Elmar Engholm [is] our NCAA qualifier in mile last year." Rounding out the Lobos' contingent is Zac Castillo and Jesús Mendoza along with redshirt freshman Taylor Potter and newcomers Josh Kerr and Dan Milechman. The men will compete Friday at 12 p.m. MT, while the women will toe the line at 12:45 p.m. MT. Check back Friday evening on GoLobos.com for meet results and a New Mexico recap.
