NCAA and NJCAA National Athletes of the Week (Nov. 2) - USTFCCCAPublished by
By Tyler Mayforth, USTFCCCA November 2, 2015 NEW ORLEANS – We’re now in the thick of things when it comes to the postseason in NCAA and NJCAA Cross Country. This past weekend was exciting as there were numerous conference championships contested in NCAA Division I and NCAA Division III, as well as several regional championships in NJCAA Division I and some tune-up racing in NJCAA Division III. Without any further ado, here are the honorees for National Athlete of the Week. Find out more about these runners by clicking their names or scrolling below.
National Athlete of the Week is an award selected and presented by the USTFCCCA Communications Staff at the beginning of each week to six collegiate cross country athletes (male and female for each of the three NCAA divisions). Nominations are open to the public. Coaches and sports information directors are encouraged to nominate their student-athletes; as are student-athletes, their families and friends, and fans of their programs. The award seeks to highlight not only the very best times, marks and scores on a week-to-week basis, but also performances that were significant on the national landscape and/or the latest in a series of strong outings. Quality of competition, suspenseful finishes and other factors will also play a role in the decision. NCAA Division I Men – Thomas Curtin, Virginia TechSenior / Leesburg, Virginia If Thomas Curtin’s win at the Pre-National Invitational two weeks ago was a statement that he belongs in the national conversation, then his win this past Friday at the ACC Championships was reassurance. Curtin outkicked Syracuse’s Justyn Knight down the stretch and won the individual title by one second in 23:23.0. Not only did Curtin beat Knight, but also several other runners who are sure to be in the hunt for All-America status come November – Louisville’s Edwin Kibichiy and two others from Syracuse (Collin Bennie andMartin Hehir), among others. Curtin and the Hokies will race again in two weeks at the Southeast Regional Championships. NCAA Division I Women – Dominique Scott, ArkansasSenior / Cape Town, South Africa In the long and storied history of the Southeastern Conference, there had never been a three-time winner in the women’s championship race. Well, that changed last Friday thanks to Arkansas’ Dominique Scott. Through 4K of the 6K race, Scott and three others were in the lead pack. Then Scott decided to push the tempo and no one was able to keep up. Scott opened up a 17-second lead by the end and won in 19:23.6. This was the second time in a row that Scott clocked a sub-20 minute 6K. Next up for Scott and the Razorbacks is the South Central Regional Championships in two weeks. NCAA Division III Men – Ian LaMere, UW-PlattevilleJunior / Green Bay, Wisconsin Everybody expected the men’s race at the WIAC Championships to be a two-man battle between UW-Platteville’s Ian LaMere and UW-Eau Claire’s Josh Thorson. That was until LaMere had other ideas. LaMere surged after the first mile and there was no catching him. He beat Thorson by 41 seconds to earn the individual title. LaMere’s winning time of 24:07.3 was the fastest 8K time in the history of the WIAC Championships. LaMere and the Pioneers will race again in two weeks at the Midwest Regional. NCAA Division III Women – Emily Bryson, Brandeis UniversityFreshman / Quincy, Massachusetts There was no closer finish than what happened at the end of the women’s race at the UAA Championships in Franklin Park. Two freshmen – Emily Bryson of Brandeis University and Khia Kuternbach of the University of Chicago – went stride for stride to the finish line. Bryson won by a hair in 22:03.12 – compared to Kurtenbach’s 22:03.44 – and became Brandeis’ first women’s individual champion since 2002. It was also a big victory for Bryson as the women’s field was loaded with ranked teams. There were six top-35 teams in the field as the race got underway. Now Bryson and the Judges turn their attention to the New England Regional Championships on Nov. 14. NJCAA Division I Men – Gilbert Kigen, Central ArizonaFreshman / Eldoret, Kenya Central Arizona College freshman Gilbert Kigen turned the NJCAA Region I Championships into a personal time trial this past weekend. Running alone for most of the race, Kigen churned out a winning time of 24:22.2 and took home the individual crown. Kigen and the Vaqueros brought home the team hardware as well, edging Paradise Valley Community College 31-34. Kigen will have a showdown with Iowa Central Community College’s Andrew Ronoh and Iowa Western Community College’s Sylvester Barus on Nov. 14 at the NJCAA Division I Cross Country Championships. NJCAA Division I Women – Leanne Pompeani, Iowa Central Community CollegeFreshman / Canberra, Australia Iowa Central Community College freshman Leanne Pompeani had no competition this past weekend at the NJCAA Region XI Championships. Pompeani, who has been a National Athlete of the Week honoree several times this season, won by more than one minute. Her finishing time was 17:52.6. We shall see if Pompeani continues her winning ways in two weeks at the NJCAA Division I Cross Country Championships. NJCAA Division III Men – Christopher Swenson, Suffolk Community CollegeFreshman / Bellport, New York Suffolk Community College’s Christopher Swenson continued his winning ways this past weekend as he placed first at the CCRI JUCO Northeast Invitational. Swenson crossed the finish line in 28:07, 14 seconds ahead of second place. This was Swenson’s fourth win of the season. Swenson and the Sharks head to the NJCAA Division III Cross Country Championships this weekend in Westfield, Massachusetts. NJCAA Division III Women – Leana Wiebelt, Suffolk Community CollegeSophomore / East Setauket, New York With two prior NJCAA Division III National Athletes of the Week in the field, it would have been easy to forget about Suffolk Community College’s Leana Wiebelt. But that wouldn’t happen this past weekend as Wiebelt was the top NJCAA DIII finisher in the CCRI JUCO Northeast Invitational. Wiebelt and the Sharks return to the course this weekend at the NJCAA Division III Cross Country Championships. Read the full article at: www.ustfccca.org
