FSU runner Clark qualifies for World Championships

A good month has officially become a great one for Charles Clark.

The Florida State junior, who won his first individual national title at the NCAA Championships two weeks ago, qualified for the World Championships on Sunday with a career-best effort.

Clark finished second in the 200-meter dash finals of the United States Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., with a personal-record time of 20.00 (the top three finishers in each event qualify).

On June 13 in Fayetteville, Ark., Clark won the NCAA meet with a time of 20.55. He then ran the third leg of Florida State's championship 4x400 relay team as well.

Now the Virginia native will be heading to Berlin for the 2009 World Championships, which begin Aug. 15.

Shawn Crawford won the 200 finals with a time of 19.73. Wallace Spearmon finished third with a time of 20.03, Ivory Williams was fourth at 20.05 and former LSU football player Xavier Carter was fifth at 20.09.

Fellow FSU sprinter Brandon Byram competed in the 200-meter dash as well and ran a 20.41 in the first round Saturday. He didn't qualify for the finals however, finishing 13th in the semifinal round with a time of 20.66.
