2013: Here Come the Collegiate Women

The past few years have seen some amazing college rivalries, but things are seemingly ready to push to a whole new level on the women’s side this spring. After a strong 2012 track and field season, which saw breakthrough performances by Katie Flood (Washington), Abbey D’Agostino (Dartmouth) and Natosha Rogers (Texas A&M), 2013 is lining up to be even better.

NCAA Returnees
1,500m Finals – 9 (of 12)
3,000m Steeplechase Finals – 7 (of 14)
5,000m Finals – 18 (of 24)
10,000m Finals – 19 (of 24)

What will undoubtedly become the most followed story of the spring is whether or not Jordan Hasay (Oregon) can close out her amazing collegiate career with her first outdoor track title. All fall, Hasay had to deal with the pressure of winning her first cross country title. While the Oregon senior didn’t pull off the victory, finishing third, she proved she’s in the best shape of her life heading into the track season.

The two-time indoor NCAA champion will no doubt be eyeing the 1,500m title once more, hoping to reverse her third place fortunes at the 2012 NCAA outdoor championships, this time taking the title back to Eugene.

While Hasay will capture much of the attention, fans can certainly not discount Flood. While Flood ran into some tough times this past fall, you can be certain she’s primed and ready to bounce back in a big way this spring and repeat as NCAA 1,500m champion. The Pac-12 clash between Flood and Hasay should be fun to watch, and will set up for a memorable NCAA final.

As Hasay looks to capture her first outdoor track title, rival D’Agostino looks to capture her second consecutive NCAA title in the 5,000m event. While D’Agostino had some big successes prior to the 2012 track season, she broke through in a big way when she outkicked the field to win the NCAA outdoor 5k title, then came back at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials with one of the most talked about performances of the Trials, as she finished fifth in the 5,000m run, .19 seconds from third and earning a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team.

D’Agostino continued her success this past fall, despite dealing with injury for much of the cross country season. The Dartmouth junior still nearly came away with the victory in Louisville, as she finished second at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, .7 behind winner Betsy Saina (Iowa State).

Speaking of Saina, she very well could be the main challenger for D’Agostino this spring over 5,000m. Saina won the NCAA indoor title in the event and has shown she may be capable of turning in a sub-15:10 performance in 2013. Saina ran strong all fall, culminating with her impressive NCAA cross country victory. You can be certain though that D’Agostino wants some revenge.

One of the most exciting match-ups few will be talking about is Saina versus Rogers in the 10,000m run.
