Top Five Distance Performers of the Weekend

What a fantastic weekend for distance running in the United States. American records, high school records and collegiate records were run, amazing performances inspired and set up the next bunch of weeks as can't miss weeks in the young U.S. track and field season. Here are our top five performers of this past weekend:

Galen Rupp – While some fans had the high hope that Galen Rupp could challenge Bernard Lagat’s 3:49.89 American mile record at the BU Terrier Classic on Saturday, few thought it was a reality. Did Rupp really pose that kind of speed? Was he going to be sharp enough? Would he have enough competition?

All those questions were answered, as Rupp busted out a 3:50.92 effort, firmly establishing himself as the fifth fastest indoor miler of all-time. Paced by Boston University’s Stuart Ross and fellow Nike Oregon Project teammate Dorian Ulrey, Rupp went through the half way point in 1:55.3, stayed even through the third 400m split and closed as best he could, lowering his PR in the mile by just over six seconds.

Rupp’s impressive early season showing proves that not only has he taken another step forward in his fitness, but he’s poised and ready to challenge for World Championship gold this summer.

Boston University Terrier Classic – Mile Results

3:50.92 Rupp, Galen (Nike)
3:57.22 McCarthy, David
3:57.74 Masters, Riley
3:58.11 Jenkins, Eric (Northeastern)
3:59.57 Peters, Rich
4:00.33 Matthews, Julian (Providence)

Top Five All-Time Indoor Mile Performances

3:48.45 Hicham El Guerrouj (Mor)
3:49.78 Eamonn Coghlan (Ire)
3:49.89 Bernard Lagat (USA)
3:50.70 Noureddine Morceli (Alg)
3:50.92 Galen Rupp (USA)

Duane Solomon – You would think an American record would automatically make number one for the week, but with Rupp’s mile performance, middle distance sensation Duane Solomon takes the number two spot with his 1:15.70 600m American record performance in Glasgow, Scotland.

Solomon charged hard from the gun, blistering a 23.50 opening 200m, then settling in to a 48.84 400m split. His final 200m were run in 26.86 and he crossed the finish line not only capturing the American record, but also beating a World Champion (400m hurdles) in Dai Greene and a fellow Olympic 800 finalist in Andrew Osagie.

Solomon’s mark bested the old record by a tenth of a second, as he wrote Chip Jenkins out of the record books, which is a nice feeling, considering the record had been around since 1987.

Mary Cain – After setting a national high school record over 3,000m earlier in the month, it came as no surprise that Mary Cain smashed another record, this time running an incredible 4:32.78 mile at the New Balance Games, besting the old record by two and a half seconds (Old Record: 4:35.24, Polly Plumer ,1982).

Cain’s performance came shortly after Rupp’s, thus causing message boards and social media to simply explode with excitement. Cain’s mark not only was a high school national indoor record, but bested the outdoor record, too. Her 1,500m split of 4:16.11 gave her that prep record, as well.

New Balance Games – New York, NY – Women’s Mile

4:31.61 Bowman, Sarah (New Balance)
4:31.65 Sifuentes, Nicole (Saucony)
4:32.78 Cain, Mary
4:34.59 Wilson, Heather (NY-NJ TC)

Cas Loxsom – Just as fans were reading the news of Duane Solomon’s 600m American record, Penn State middle distance star Cas Loxsom was challenging the mark. At the Penn State National Invitational, Loxsom exploded to a new US#2 mark of 1:15.79, which would have set a new American record just hours earlier (the old record was 1:15.80).

In addition, Loxsom’s mark broke the collegiate record in the event and showed he’s back to running 100% after struggling in 2012. The senior now seems poised for another big season of racing.

Brie Felnagle – While national records and top five all-time performances were run, one race out west got overlooked in a big way. At the University of Washington on Saturday, the women’s 3,000m at the UW Invitational featured a very strong field, headlined by collegiate standouts Abbey D’Agostino and Jordan Hasay. While the talented duo created much of the pre-race hype, it was pros Brie Felnagle and Kate Grace who stole the show.

With all four (Felnagle, Grace, D’Agostino and Hasay) running stride for stride heading into the final two laps, ultimately the two professionals pulled away, with Felnagle outlasting Grace 8:54.76-8:55.06. Both performances were fine ways to start the season, while D’Agostino and Hasay ran terrific early season times that are sure to guide them towards competitive match-ups at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in a few weeks.

UW Invitational – Women’s 3,000m Results

8:54.74 Felnagle, Brie (adidas)
8:55.06 Grace, Kate (Oiselle)
8:55.41 D’Agostino, Abbey (Dartmouth)
8:57.46 Hasay, Jordan (Oregon)
9:06.35 Moultrie, Josephine (New Mexico)

Actually, you've listed the top 5 indoor "performers" of all time, not the top 5 indoor mile "performances" of all time-- both Coghlan and Morceli have 2 mile performances faster than Rupp's. Rupp's time constitutes the 7th fastest indoor mile ever run, even though he's the 5th fastest indoor miler.
