Wisconsin & Pre-Nats Produce Significant Shift in Division I Cross Country Regional Rankings

By Kyle Terwillegar, USTFCCCA

October 20, 2014

NEW ORLEANS – Seven new NCAA Division I cross country teams emerged from the Wisconsin adidas Invitational/Pre-National Invitational weekend projected in Monday’s U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Regional Team Rankings to claim automatic bids into the NCAA Championships, but the most important weekend of the regular season only produced one new regional No. 1.

But what a seismic change it was: Ranked No. 1 nationally all year long, the Michigan women were deposed from their throne atop the Great Lakes Region following a stinging third-place showing at Pre-Nats behind Mid-Atlantic No. 1 Georgetown (national No. 4) and West No. 1 Oregon (national No. 3), 110-139-143.

Moving up to take the Wolverines’ spot were the national No. 2 Spartans of Michigan State, who thrashed the season’s toughest field (outside of NCAAs on November 22 in Terre Haute, Indiana) at Wisconsin by more than 100 points. Competing against a field with 26 nationally ranked or vote-receiving teams, MSU put six runners in the top 45 (no other team had more than three) to take down national South Central No. 1 Arkansas (national No. 5), 87-191.

Will the Spartans also claim their in-state rival’s No. 1 national rank in Tuesday’s National Coaches Poll? Or will Georgetown not only take the head-to-head win from Michigan but also the Poll’s top spot?

Whichever way the voters decide, what is certain is that the rest of Monday’s Regional Team Rankings will ensure the remainder of the National Coaches Polls for both genders will also undergo significant shifts.

Five men’s regions saw new teams move into their top two positions – remember, the top two teams at each Regional Championship meet will automatically advance into the NCAA Championships – while four more teams slid up onto the bubble into the third position. The women’s rankings got two new No. 2 teams plus four more new No. 3 squads.

Both the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions produced new No. 2 teams for men and women this weekend.

In the Northeast, the Iona men (No. 14 nationally) finished runner-up at Wisconsin ahead of national No. 9Wisconsin, No. 5 Portland, No. 7 Stanford, No. 3 Northern Arizona and No. 9 UCLA. Normally this would put a team atop its region, but the one team the Gaels lost out to was Northeast No. 1 Syracuse (national No. 6). All told, 12 of the region’s 15 teams were in a different spot from a week ago.

Also in the Northeast, the Dartmouth women stepped up to No. 2 after a head-to-head win over former No. 2Boston College (national No. 17) at Wisconsin. Defending national champion Providence (national 23) dropped to No. 5 in the region as 10 of the top 12 teams moved around, while the Iona women – running without Kate Avery – moved up five positions after taking down Providence at Wisconsin.

Among the biggest surprises at Wisconsin were the West Virginia women (No. 20 nationally), who finished fifth overall after entering as the 15th-highest ranked team in the field. The Mountaineers usurped Villanova(national No. 21) for No. 2 in the region.

While the headlines at Georgetown rightfully revolved around their women’s upset of No. 1 Michigan, theGeorgetown men had themselves an impressive run at Pre-Nats, too, to finish third behind national No. 1Colorado and No. 2 Oregon. The Hoya men swapped spots with Princeton (national No. 24) to move up to No. 2.

The rundown from elsewhere around the country:

  • SOUTHEAST: The Furman men (No. 26 nationally) moved to No. 2 after finishing fourth at Pre-Nationals, while the NC State women (No. 29 nationally) moved up onto the bubble at No. 3 with a fifth-place showing at Pre-Nats.
  • MOUNTAIN: The New Mexico men (No. 16 nationally) jumped BYU (No. 12 nationally) to check in at No. 3 following a 12th-place finish at Wisconsin (just one spot ahead of BYU), while the Northern Arizonawomen (receiving votes nationally) also leapfrogged BYU (No. 30 nationally) for the No. 3 spot with an 11th-place showing at Pre-Nationals. The BYU women were 26th at Wisconsin.
  • WEST: Stanford‘s men (No. 7 nationally) were fifth at Wisconsin to move up one spot to No. 3 in the region. The Cardinal switched positions with UCLA, which finished seventh in Madison.
  • MIDWEST: The Tulsa men (No. 29 nationally) moved up one position to No. 2 with a fifth-place finish at Pre-Nats, swapping places with Oklahoma (No. 20 nationally) after its 17th-place showing at Wisconsin.
  • SOUTH: Mississippi‘s men were eighth at Pre-Nationals to move up two spots to No. 2, while Middle Tennessee dominated at Chattanooga to also jump two spots to No. 3. Making both moves possible were the Auburn men (receiving votes nationally), who dropped two spots to No. 4 following a runner-up-place finish at Alabama. For the women, Alabama moved up two spots to No. 3 with a win at its home invite.

New to this week’s men’s rankings were Youngstown State and Cincinnati (Great Lakes); Illinois State andNebraska (Midwest); Boston U (Northeast); South Alabama (South); Sam Houston State (South Central); and George Mason (Southeast).

Joining the rankings for the women were Bowling Green and Western Michigan (Great Lakes); Rider (Mid-Atlantic); Iowa (Midwest); Idaho State (Mountain); Southern MissTennessee and Samford (South);Arkansas-Little RockCentral Arkansas and UTSA (South Central); Appalachian State (Southeast); andOregon State (West).

NCAA Division I Regional Championships will be held around the country Friday, November 14.

USTFCCCA Regional Cross Country Rankings are determined subjectively by a single member coach in each respective region. The regional representative is tasked with weighing returning team strength with current-season results in determining predicted team finishes at the NCAA Regional Championships.
