Five Things to Watch For - Stanford Invitational 2015Published by
Five Things to Look For at the Stanford InvitationalPublished by Adam Schneider on April 2, 2015 The Stanford Invitational features events with future NCAA, US, and international champions. Most of the entries are filled out by west coast teams and there are a few top teams and individuals visiting from outside of the region to take advantage of fast, competitive races. Here are five story lines to watch at the meet: Top Ranked Teams Texas A&M and Arkansas are Bringing Full TeamsTexas A&M brought many of their top athletes from their top ranked men’s and women’s (NCAA discus champion Shelbi Vaughan is one of many) track teams. They feature the 2014 Bowerman winner, Deon Lendore. He won last year’s NCAA outdoor 400m and anchored their 4x400m relay to a win. Arkansas brought their top athletes on the men’s and women’s squads and feature a collegiate record-holder. Omar McLeod, the recent NCAA indoor 60m hurdle champion (set the collegiate record of 7.45 for 60m hurdles and he is entered in both 110m and 400m hurdles races at this meet). Cheserek, Jenkins and Futsum will Try to Qualify Over 10,000mThis race always re-writes the annual collegiate list and resets many PRs. Seven of the top nine fastest NCAA D1 returners will be in this race. Last year, BYU’s Jason Witt won the race but finished eleventh at the ’14 NCAA meet. Other athletes use this as a great race to qualify for the NCAA meet. Oregon’s Edward Cheserek (21st), Parker Stinson (22nd), and Trevor Dunbar (23rd) were among 28 under 29 minutes and they finished first, eighth and fifth respectively at the NCAA meet. Northern Arizona’s Futsum Zienasellasie was third at this season’s NCAA 10,000m cross country championships and Kemoy Campbell of Arkansas had two top-four finishes at this year's NCAA indoor meet and both are looking to have their best outdoor track seasons since 2013. Top Collegians Avery and Scott Will Race Top Pros in Women's 10,000mThis event is likely to be a great qualifying opportunity for many of the top collegian 10,000m runners. We will also see a re-drawing of the collegiate list with the completion of this race. Last year 19 competitors gained qualifying times for the NCAA regional meets. UAB’s Elinor Kirk ran the collegiate season’s fastest time of 32:17.05. US Record holder Shalane Flanagan and former NCAA champions will lead a strong group including this season’s NCAA cross country champion Kate Avery of Iona, two-time NCAA indoor champion Dominique Scott of Arkansas, NCAA cross country top-10 finishers Rachel Johnson of Baylor and Chelsea Blaase of Tennessee, and ’14 NCAA 10,000m all-Americans Elvin Kibet of Arizona (fourth) andKaitlyn Fischer of Missouri (ninth). Emma Bates Returns to the Track Against Top Pros over 5000mLast year Marielle Hall was running for Texas and shocked everyone by running 15:19.26 and beating two pros, Alisha Williams and Laura Thweat, and a number of top collegians. Hall now runs for Nike after winning the ’14 NCAA outdoor title in the same event. Hall, Williams and several other pros will push each other ahead of a strong group of entries including NCAA cross country all-Americans Emma Bates of Boise State (also 2014 NCAA 10,000 champion), Liv Westphal of Boston College, Maddie Meyers of Washington, and Joanna Thompson of North Carolina State. Highly Competitive 800m RacesThis event features two finalists from last year’s NCAA championships and the top runner on the college list this year, Arizona’s Collins Kibet (he will run in heat 2 with runners better known as milers, Sam Penzenstadler and Izaic Yorks). In the fastest heat, ’14 NCAA meet fourth place finisher Patrick Rono runs unattached and his Arkansas teammate Tomas Squella, 2014 NCAA semi-finalist, have run the sixth and seventh fastest times of all returners. They will face 1500m Olympian Lopez Lomong and BYU’s Shaquille Walker, who showed a great ability to win tough races indoors but didn’t advance at the NCAA meet like talented Tre’tez Kinnaird of Indiana.
