NEW ORLEANS – As the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships get ever closer – the Countdown to Tracktown is down to just over seven weeks (June 10-13 in Eugene, Oregon) – so too does the race for the women’s national team title.

Eight women’s teams in the week three edition of the National Team Computer Rankings released Monday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) continued to jockey for position in what should be a wild chase for the national title and the three remaining podium spots.

The top three of defending national champion No. 1 Texas A&M (307.18 team rankings points), No. 2 Florida (287.68) and No. 3 Texas (284.71) remained firmly at the head of that octet, with the remaining five in that group – and, in fact, all but one team in the top 25 – checking in at a different position from a week ago.

That group of five is separated by just 22 points in the rankings (for a full explanation of the rankings system – which does not equate to the scoring system used at NCAAs – click here). No. 4 Southern California(267.35) was the week’s biggest top-ten mover, gaining three spots behind the 100-meter duo of No. 11 Ky Westbrook and No. 13 Alexis Faulknor, and No. 6 100-meter hurdler Dior Hall.

Best Marks of the Weekend
Weekend Recap

Those individual ranks (and subsequent ranks throughout this article) take into account both the top performances of this 2015 season and, for the final time this outdoor season, the top marks by returners from the 2014 campaign.

Dropping down a spot for the second week in a row was indoor champion Arkansas (264.98) to No. 5.

Up two spots to No. 6 was Oregon (258.49). The Ducks got a few points from Jenna Prandini’s 10.92 performance at 100 meters – the second fastest in collegiate history – and her 22.42 at 200 meters, but she was already ranked high in those events to begin with. Jasmine Todd’s No. 5 time at 100 meters, up from No. 15, provided a bigger boost.

Georgia (254.36) dropped two spots to No. 7, as did Kentucky(245.59) to No. 8. Baylor and Kansas swapped spots at No. 9 and No. 10 to round out the top 10.

Led by 2013 co-champion No. 1 Texas A&M, the men’s rankings remained static through the top six: 2013 co-champion No. 2Florida, defending champion No. 3 Oregon, No. 4 LSU, No. 5Southern California and No. 6 Texas.

The top three teams have separated themselves so far this season as prime contenders for the title, while the next seven teams in the rankings are all solid contenders for the final podium spot.

The only movements in the top 10 were a pair of swaps between No. 7 Arkansas and No. 8 Florida State, and No. 9 Alabama and No. 10 Texas Tech.

Where to Watch the Top 10 Teams This Weekend

Of those top 10 men’s teams, five will be heading to Philadelphia this weekend for the Penn Relays (No. 1 Texas A&M, No. 3 Oregon, No. 4 LSU, No. 6 Texas, No. 8 Florida State), as well as three from the women’s top 10 (Texas A&M, No. 3 Texas, No. 6 Oregon).

The other mainstay on this particular weekend in the spring is the Drake Relays, which will feature three top-10 women’s teams in No. 5 Arkansas, No. 7 Georgia and No. 9 Baylor. No. 7 Arkansas and No. 10 Texas Tech headline that men’s competition.

More top-10 action could be had at the Florida Tom Jones Memorial Classic (Women: No. 2 Florida, No. 8 Kentucky; Men: No. 2 Florida, No. 8 Florida State), but both of the Gators’ opponents will be splitting their squads to UC San Diego and the Penn Relays, respectively.

Elsewhere in the Rankings

No team in either set of rankings moved up farther than the No. 25 men of Syracuse, who improved 14 spots from a week ago. A pair of teams at No. 20 and 21 in BYU and UTEP combined to match that total with seven-spot gains apiece.

For the women, No. 20 Iona was the biggest gainer of the week with an 11-spot improvement. No. 24 Notre Dame moved up six spots, No. 16 Virginia Tech jumped up five and 2014 cross country champion Michigan State improved four spots to No. 14.

At the regional level, new men’s teams took over at No. 1 in four of the nine regions, as did new women’s teams in three.

For the men, Princeton (Mid-Atlantic Region), Texas Tech (Mountain), Buffalo (Northeast) and Virginia(Southeast) all ascended into the top spot, as did the women of Michigan State (Great Lakes), Alabama(South) and Oregon (West).
