Small Colleges Race at Championship Sites This Weekend

Published by Adam Schneider/RunnerSpace.com on October 8, 2015

This weekend is a break for the majority of ranked NCAA division one cross country teams.  After a tough weekend with top-7s pushing to score ‘points’ during the counting part of the season, many of these teams will either train hard or start backing off to get ready for the biggest non-championship meets of the year, Wisconsin Adidas on October 16th and NCAA D1 Pre-Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky on October 17th.

This weekend we will turn our focus to a number of top D2, D3, and NAIA-centered meets with two meets on championship courses (D3 and NAIA). D1 teams will also compete in meets with athletes not expected to compete in Louisville or Madison or using it as a training run, such as the New England Championships.

Charlotte, North Carolina is the host for the NAIA championships this year and teams will take advantage of the Royal Cross Country Challenge on October 9th to check out the course. Lewis-Clark State (ranked #2 for men, #12 women) is traveling from Idaho for the meet and Olivet Nazarene (Il.) (ranked #4 for men, #17 women) will be there.

The New England Championships will be on October 10th at Franklin Park in Boston. D1 schools expected  to compete are Providence, Dartmouth, and New Hampshire and top ranked D3 schools Tufts (ranked #3 for women, #30 men), MIT (ranked #4 for women, #13 men), Middlebury (ranked #7 for women), Amherst (ranked #4 for men, #15 women), Bates (ranked #19 for men) Keene State (ranked #27 for women), Colby (ranked #28 for women, #25 men)  .

The most intense division-centered competition with teams in the same division (D3) is the Wisconsin-Oshkosh AAE Invitational, the D3 host site, that includes teams from around the country. #2 North Central men will compete and a number of top WIAC teams, including #1 UW-Eau Claire and #8 UW-La Crosse. Willamette (ranked #14 for women) will visit from the west coast to run on the NCAA championship course.

Teams from the RMAC (D2) will descend on the Fort Hays State Tiger Open on October 10th. Adams State (ranked #2 for women and #4 for men), Western State (ranked #6 for women and #10 for men), and New Mexico Highlands (ranked #11 for men) are among others traveling to Kansas. This will be good meet in preparation for the RMAC meet hosted by Adams State in two weeks.

Many of the CCAA conference (D2) will descend on San Francisco on October 9th for the San Francisco State Invitational in anticipation of the CCCA championship meet to be held there on October 24th. Chico State (ranked #2 for men and #5 women), San Francisco State (ranked #24 for Men), and Cal Baptist (ranked #12 for women and  #22 for men). NAIA #1 men’s (and #15 for women) team Southern Oregon will also compete.

On the northwest coast, the 42nd annual Western Washington Cross Country Invitational will be held. This should be better attended than in recent years because in two weeks the GNAC Championship meet (D2) will also be held on the Western Washington (ranked 18th for men and 10th for women) home course in Bellingham, Washington. Entered teams are Alaska Anchorage (ranked 5th for men and 7th for women), Simon Fraser (ranked 12th for men), Seattle Pacific (ranked 17th for women), and Western Oregon among other D2 teams. NAIA power British Columbia (ranked #3 for women, #7 for men) will also race.

One of the big meets in the midwest is the Conference Crossover including D2 teams on October 10th hosted by #15 (women) Lewis College in Romeoville, Illinois. This is a crossover meet including GLIAC and GLVC teams. This is also a preview for their conference meets two weeks later.  Entrants may include four in the top 22 on the men’s side including #1 Grand Valley State and five of the top 15 women’s teams including #3 Grand Valley State. Some of these schools will be at the Michigan Intercollegiate Championships, hosted this year by #1 D2 women’s team Hillsdale. Hillsdale is led by Emily Oren, two-time USTFCCCA.org athlete-of-the-week and 2015 NCAA indoor and outdoor athlete of the year.

The Bethel Invitational on October 9th will include NAIA powers host Bethel (#17 men), Taylor (ranked #5 for women, #10 men) and Aquinas (ranked for #2 women, #14 men) among other strong teams.
