Hernandez, Tjeerdsma set personal bests at BCU Invite

SIOUX CITY, Iowa The Dakota Wesleyan University men s and women s cross country teams ran in the Briar Cliff Invitational Saturday afternoon in Sioux City, Iowa, and two members of the men s squad set personal best times at the meet.

Sophomore Andrew Hernandez and freshman Trace Tjeerdsma both ran personal best times at the meet the Tigers third of the season. Hernandez led Dakota Wesleyan, finishing the 8K course in 75th in a time of 27:51.67. Tjeerdsma finished 87th in 28:11.29.

Also for Dakota Wesleyan, Mike Lynch finished 96th in 28:24.59, David Elliott was 133rd in 31:02.69 and Chris Sterrett in his DWU cross country debut finished 148th in 33:52.6. As a team, the Tigers finished in 13th.

Augustana College won the team title and Morningside College finished in second. Individually, Travis Beniak running unattached won the invite in 23:51.65. Bobby Brockmueller, also running unattached, was second in 23:58.36.

Two members of the Tiger women s team also competed. Kayleen Gupman was the top Tiger finisher, taking 120th in 22:33.43. Aimee Lenocker also competed and took 131st in 23:18.3.

Augustana won the women s team title and Morningside was second. Ashley Unruh ran unattached and won the event in 17:39.95.

The Tigers are back in action Saturday, Oct. 22, when they travel to Yankton, S.D., for the Mount Marty Invite. That will serve as a final practice run for Dakota Wesleyan before the Great Plains Athletic Conference Championships, which are Nov. 5 in Lincoln, Neb.
