The Washington indoor track and field team kicked day one of the New Mexico Collegiate Challenge off with a number of excellent performances at the Albuquerque Convention Center, where the Huskies will return to for the 2014 indoor championships next month. Facing off against teams from across the American southwest, including Rice, Texas Tech, Texas, Nevada, and hometown New Mexico, the UW made strides in its goal to qualify as many athletes to the NCAA indoor championship as possible. Sophomore Jax Thoirs, from Glasgow, Scotland, became just the third UW athlete in UW history to jump higher than 18 feet in the indoor men’s pole vault, with a height of 18 feet, 1/2 inche that tied him for the fourth best in the NCAA this season.
