[Men's Indoor Track & Field] Three Cougars earn All-American Honors at NAIA Championships

Comments

GENEVA, OH – The Spring Arbor University men's track and field team made some noise at the NAIA National Championships in Geneva, OH on Saturday afternoon.  Seniors Nathan Martin and Kyle Anderson earned All-American honors in the 5000m run with Martin taking 1st place and Anderson running his personal record (PR) to finish 8th.  Jeremy Rogers soared higher than he ever has before in the Pole Vault, placing 8th as he also received his All-American plaque to score for the Cougars.

In the 5000m run, it was touch and go for much of the race, especially during the last two to three laps.  Martin led for most of the first 10 laps when Phil Rizzo from Saint Francis (IL) made his bid to pass Martin coming out of turn 2, but Martin was able to hold him off until Rizzo made a second bid for the lead and passed Martin with less than a lap to go.

Martin trailed by more than two to three strides and didn't appear to be able to regain the lead on the back stretch.  But Martin's experience and shear internal fortitude overcame any doubts and Martin made an incredible comeback over the last 150 meters and pasted Rizzo down the stretch to win by less than half of a second.  While it wasn't his career best time, Martin's 14:22.14 was good enough to take gold and earn 10 points for Spring Arbor.

Anderson made it a day for himself as well as he put in his best time of 14:49.44 for 8th place and earn one point for the Cougars.  Running outside the top eight for much of the race, Anderson still knew he was running at his PR pace and didn't panic as he didn't think the rest of the field could keep the pace.  Anderson proved to be correct as he continued his pace and the field fell back and the senior Cougar finished in the 8th spot a little over six seconds ahead of Jordan Valle of Wayland Baptist (TX).

Rogers came into the NAIA Championships with a best vault of 15' 6 ¼" and had an idea that that might not be good enough to earn All-American honors and would have to better that to capture that prestigious moniker.  Rogers did exactly that to clear the bar set at 15' 7" to take the 8th spot on the podium.

"To watch these three young men achieve what they did today was a blessing for me," said Coach Dante Ottolini.  "Four years ago, Nathan (Martin) and Kyle (Anderson) didn't even get to the finals and Jeremy (Rogers) no-heighted.  Their journey over the last four to five years has been nothing less than spectacular.  I am obviously proud of the athletes that they have become, but words are hard to express how proud I am of the men that they have also become."
