First National Athletes of the Week for the 2014 Outdoor T&F Season AnnouncedBy Kyle Terwillegar, USTFCCCA March 24, 2014
NEW ORLEANS – Looking at the results posted by the first U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Athletes of the Week in this outdoor season, one would be hard-pressed to guess most athletes were only just opening up their spring campaigns. From triumphant returns to competition to all-time great and Division-leading performances, the first class of National Athletes of the Week for the 2014 outdoor campaign has it all.
For Georgia Tech senior Jonathan Gardner (Chicago, Ill./Whitney M. Young Magnet HS), his nation-leading 52-1 (15.87m) at the Alabama Relays by nearly a foot-and-a-half was more than a typical season debut. In his very first competition since earlier in the fall undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus – forcing him out of the entire indoor campaign – he won his signature event with his best-ever wind-legal mark of his career en route to Division I Men’s National Athlete of the Week honors. He sits atop the all-college descending order list by two-and-a-half inches as the only man better than 52 feet so far this season. Elsewhere in the ACC, Duke sophomore pole vaulter Megan Clark (Fort Benning, Ga./Columbus HS) bounced back from a disappointing 14th-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships with a career-best clearance of 14-7¼ (4.45m) to win the UNC Tar Heels Carolina Relays and garner Division I Women’s National Athlete of the Week accolades. Not only did the vault elevate her more than seven inches above the next-best vaulter of the young outdoor season, but it equaled the No. 9 spot on the all-time outdoor collegiate performers list with 2013 indoor champion Natalia Bartnovskaya of Kansas and Alexis Paine of Alabama (2013). After vaulting all by herself for five of her seven heights, she cleared her winning height on just one attempt before unsuccessfully taking three more at 15-1 (4.60m). Texas A&M-Kingsville junior high jumper Jeron Robinson (Houston, Texas/Travis HS) also had a sour taste in his mouth after finishing runner-up after a tie-break on misses at 7-1 (2.16m) as the top seed at the Division II Indoor Championships. Like Clark, he made up for it in a big way to win Division II Men’s National Athlete of the Week honors. Jumping higher than any other Division II man outdoors since 2007, he cleared a collegiate-leading 7-6 (2.29m) to win the TAMU-Kingsville Cactus Cup by nearly a foot. Not since Jim Dilling of Minnesota State tied the DII record of 7-6½ (2.30m) at the 2007 Drake Relays has a Division II man jumped higher. New Haven senior sprinter Ada Udaya (West Haven, Conn./West Haven HS) posted a pair of Division II-leading times at 100 and 200 meters – both in wins at the Coastal Carolina Shamrock Invitational against mostly Division I competition – to earn the Division II Women’s National Athlete of the Week award. Her 23.22w (+2.1m/s) moved her up to No. 12 on the all-time, all-condition’s Division II performers list, while her 11.48 (+1.3m/s) was just .01 shy of the all-time top-20 performers list. Earning the Division III men’s award was Penn State-Behrend frosh Malik Moffett, who posted top-four Division III marks in three different events at the Cal U Early Bird. His 10.68w (+2.5m/s) at 100 meters sits at No. 2, his 21.68w (+2.3m/s) at 200 meters No. 3, and a 6-6¾ (2.00m) in the high jump No. 4. He won all three events, in addition to running a leg of the winning 4×100 relay. A pair of top-ranked Division III performances in the long jump and the 100-meter hurdles boosted Baldwin Wallace sophomore Melanie Winters (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls HS) to the top Division III women’s honor of the week. With a leap of 18-10 (5.74m, +2.0m/s) at the Charlotte 49er Classic, she finished fourth overall against Division I and II competition. Her 14.53 (+1.9m/s) in the 100-meter hurdles to finish 13th was a personal best by more than half a second from a year ago. National Athletes of the Week are announced each Monday throughout the season, with male and female awards for all three NCAA Divisions. Nominations are open to the public and can be completed here.
