Quanesha Burks Claims Long Jump Gold at the 2015 NACAC Senior Championships

Published by Alabama SID on August 10, 2015

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica - Alabama track and field's Quanesha Burks added to her list of accolades on Sunday, besting the competition to win gold in the long jump at the 2015 North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Senior Championships in San Jose, Costa Rica.

Tied with an athlete from the British Virgin Islands through the first two rounds, Burks produced a leap of 22-9 (6.93m) to the maximum aiding wind (+2.0) to take over the top spot in the event. That distance was a new lifetime-best for Burks, while also breaking the school record of 21-9 (6.63m) she set on April 18 of this year at the John Jacobs Invitational in Norman, Okla. The jump was also good enough to eclipse the entry standard for the 2015 IAAF World Championships.

Burks was competing as part of Team USA. Her victory resulted in one of 27 gold medals won by the team during the course of the three-day event. Overall, Team USA took home a total of 47 medals, easily the most of any nation. Burks was joined on the long jump podium by teammate Sha'Keela Saunders, a member of the University of Kentucky women's track and field squad.
