Key Losses For Iona Shake Up DI Regional Rankings - USTFCCCA

NEW ORLEANS – There was no change at the top of the most recent U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I Regional Team Rankings that were released on Monday.

Each of the 18 teams that were No. 1 in the season’s first rankings on August 31, including reigning national champions Colorado (Mountain Region, men) and Michigan State (Great Lakes, women), remained in their respective spots.

Regional Rankings Summary PDF | Division I XC Rankings Central

There is, however, a power shift in the Northeast Region that will be felt on the national stage come November and beyond.

The USTFCCCA confirmed with Iona Athletics that reigning NCAA Division I Women’s Cross Countryindividual champion Kate Avery and indoor mile All-American Rosie Clarke elected to forgo their final year of NCAA cross country eligibility. Avery and Clarke no longer appear on Iona’s roster on either ICGaels.com or TFRRS (Track & Field Results Reporting System).

With that news known, the Gales tumbled 10 spots in their region from No. 2 to No. 12. Syracuse’s women took up residence behind Providence, and Dartmouth moved up two spots from No. 5 to No. 3.

In the Mid-Atlantic Region, Penn State‘s women jumped two spots to the all-important No. 2 position. The Nittany Lions won the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitaional this past weekend over Syracuse, West Virginia and Grove City. The region’s previous No. 2 West Virginia and No. 3 Villanova both shifted down one spot.

There were several new additions to the rankings on both polls with 15 teams (10 women, five men) debuting. Of note, Incarnate Word has both its men’s and women’s team in the South Central Regional rankings for the first time in school history, while Alabama’s men surged to No. 10 in the South Region.

NCAA Division I Regional Championships will be held around the country on Friday, November 13 with the national meet occurring eight days later in Louisville, Kentucky.

USTFCCCA Regional Cross Country Rankings are determined subjectively by a single member coach in each respective region. The regional representative is tasked with weighing returning teams’ strength with current season results (if applicable) in determining predicted team finishes at the NCAA Regional Championships.
