Florida beckons for Christchurch sprinter

By HAMISH BIDWELL - The Press

If you don't ask, you don't get.

So when Christchurch 100-metre runner David Ambler heard that Florida State University was recruiting sprinters, he figured he might as well let them know he was available.

Much to his surprise they were interested with the result being that Ambler will now join their track and field team on a full scholarship.

"They've got one of the best track records in the US. They won [the NCAA championships] in 2007 and 2008 and were runners-up this year so I was like `if I'm going to target a school, why not target the best?'," Ambler said.

"So I emailed them and told them a little bit about myself and they came back and said they liked the look of me.

"The last 100-metre sprinter they had was Walter Dix so I was thinking `wow, a school that took Walter Dix to Olympic medals [bronze in both the 100 and 200 at Beijing] want me to come over and run for them'," Ambler said.

"They've got a four-year plan for me, so they see me [running] at 10.35s now, but given my rate of improvement they'll be thinking that by the end of four years I should be in the NCAA final and right up in medal contention and running 10-zeros."
