Hunter turns pro, signs with adidas

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

Drew Hunter has turned professional and signed a 10-year contract with adidas, according to a report by Chris Chavez of Sports Illustrated.

By signing the deal, Hunter, who broke Alan Webb's indoor high school national record in the mile, is forgoing his collegiate eligibility. He had committed last fall to the University of Oregon before winning the Foot Locker Cross Country National Championship.

Hunter broke the four-minute mile three times in 2016, including twice indoors at The Armory in New York City.

Here is a statement from his agent, Ray Flynn:

Purcellville, VA, July 8th — Drew Hunter, the American High School Indoor Mile Record Holder, has decided to turn professional and has accepted a long term contract from Adidas.

Drew Hunter becomes the first male high school distance runner ever to turn professional. He ran a stellar 3.57.81 for the mile run at this year's Millrose Games in New York City.

Hunter is one of nine American athletes that has broken four minutes for the mile as a high school student. He is also the only high school runner to break eight minutes for the 3,000 meters indoors.

Terms of the contract are undisclosed but require for Adidas to pay for Drew to attend a university of his choice.

"I am so excited to begin the next phase in my career and beyond happy to represent Adidas. It was an extremely difficult decision as I had planned to attend the University of Oregon. I was blessed with two great options to further my running career. I have the greatest respect for the coaches and the Track & Cross Country programs at the University of Oregon, and in particular Coach Andy Powell”.

Hunter will continue to train in Virginia while he and his family determine where he will train and attend college.
