Cross country makes history as Lady Bisons six-peat at ASUN ChampionshipsPublished by
Spartanburg, S.C. – For the first time in conference history, the Lipscomb women’s cross country team has won its sixth consecutive ASUN Championship after taking first placing on Saturday with a team point total of 33. The Lady Bisons landed all seven runners on the All-Conference squads, and five in the top 10 finishers. "We certainly don't take conference championships for granted,” Lipscomb Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Bill Taylor said. “It's not easy to win. So we are incredibly blessed to get six in a row with the women.” Senior Sally Larson led the way for Lipscomb, grabbing fourth place with a time of 17:38.20. "We ran well today,” Taylor said. “Sally ended her ASUN XC career with another all-ASUN performance.” Freshman Courtney Brenner and sophomore Bridgette Doucet joined Larson on the All-Conference First Team, finishing in fifth and seventh with marks of 17:44.12 and 17:48.29, respectively. "Courtney had a breakout race, her best collegiate race,” Taylor said. “This race gave her an idea of what she is capable of. She is going to have a terrific career.” Brenner’s time was good enough to earn the Freshman of the Year award, an honor the Lady Bisons have now won four years in a row. Juniors Kacey Kemper (17:49.66) and Avery Franklin (17:50.04) also finished in the top 10 in eighth and ninth place on their way to earning Second-Team All-Conference honors. “Avery was our most aggressive runner,” Taylor said. Senior Barabara Lee Ball earned a spot on the All-Conference Second Team with an 11th place finish and a time of 17:50.58. Sophomore Hannah Owens grabbed the Lady Bisons’ final All-Conference slot as she finished 13th and with a time of 18:19.81. Up next for the Lady Bisons will be the South Regional Championships which take place on Nov. 11. "We are excited for the South Region Championships in two weeks,” Taylor said. “The girls are ready. Hopefully Brooke Kingma can get healthy by then. She dropped out of the race today with a foot injury.” On the men’s side, Lipscomb took second overall ending their three year streak as conference champions. The Bisons finished with a total of total of 61 points and placed four runners on the All-Conference and All-Freshman squads. "The men had a tough race today,” Taylor said. “We were actually fully in the race at the four-mile mark. North Florida finished incredibly. That was the difference. "Other than that, I thought the guys ran really well and very hard. It's just such a young group for us out there today, with seven of our nine guys being freshmen or sophomores. They will learn. and they will be a force to be reckoned with very soon.” Junior Sam Remington earned the Bisons’ lone All-Conference First-Team spot after finishing sixth with a time of 25:33.09. Freshmen Kyle Johnson (25:38.49) and William Kachman (25:39.21) earned spots on the All-Conference Second Team as well as the All-Freshman Team after finishing back-to-back in 11th and 12th place, respectively.
