INDIANAPOLIS -- Butler sophomore Callum Hawkins punched his ticket to the NCAA cross country national meet with a championship performance at the 2011 Great Lakes Region meet in Toledo, Ohio, on Saturday, Nov. 12.  The talented second-year runner captured the men's individual title in the regional meet.

Hawkins paced a field of more than 200 runners, winning the 10K race at Ottawa Park Golf Course in 30:01.5.  He finished more than seven seconds ahead of runner up Eric Finan of Cincinnati.

Hawkins became Butler's first regional champ since 1998, when Julius Mwangi won the men's title.

Teammate Ross Clarke put himself solidly in position for an at-large bid to the national meet by placing 13th overall in a time of 30:36.5.  The two Butler runners helped the Bulldogs finish sixth in the team competition, setting up a possible team at-large bid.  Butler entered the meet ranked seventh in the region.

Freshman Tom Curr was the third Butler runner across the finish line, coming in 40th overall in 31:16.4.  Freshman Harry Ellis came in 57th in 31:39.7, and freshman James Martin finished 61st in 31:42 to round out Butler's top five.  Junior Kevin Oblinger placed 83rd in 32:07.8 and freshman Kodi Mullins finished 128th in 33:02.6.

Sophomore Shelbi Burnett paced Butler's women, ranked 12th in the region, to a tenth place team finish.  She came in 53rd overall in the 6K race in 21:51.6.  Senior Becky Howarth finished 56th in 21:56.1, while freshman Mara Olson placed 58th in 21:56.1.

Rounding out Butler's top five runners were junior Kaitlyn Love, who came in 84th in 22:19.8 and sophomore Alyson Fosnot, who was 103rd in 22:35.1.  Senior Lauren Haberkorn placed 118th in 22:51.7 and freshman Erica Carlson finished 155th in 23:30.7.
