[Men's Track & Field] Pair of Jimmies Earn a Trip to Indiana

Comments

The wind was the big winner Friday at the Northern State Open in Aberdeen.

The howling breeze never relented in Aberdeen and made things very difficult, especially for the distance runners. Despite the adverse conditions, two JC men still managed to qualify for nationals.

Rob Nelson spun the discus 164 feet, 2 inches, a personal best as part of a strong showing by the JC men in the event.

Trent Roemmich, the star sophomore from Linton, qualified in his second race, this time in the 110 hurdles.

Both JC coaches were pleased with their team's efforts, especially considering the conditions.

"It was miserable," men's coach Ed Crawford said. "The lap races, those poor kids never had a chance."

Jim Clark, JC women's coach, agreed.

"It was one of those days where you leave the stopwatch in the bus and just go compete," he said. "The kids did a good job doing that. They competed hard. Did the best they could."

Nelson's 164-2 in the discus was a doozy of a throw and blew away the field. Garrett Tenney (143-11) and Mike Findlay (142-11) placed third and fourth.
