Daniel Kuhn went from Trine baseball player to IU track athlete

Published by David Woods/Indy Star on July 1st, 2014

Indiana University's track program might have hit a home run in persuading Daniel Kuhn to quit baseball.

Kuhn, a recent Shelbyville High School graduate, has signed a letter of intent to run for the Hoosiers. He intended to play baseball for Trine University, but IU recruiter Andrew Poore was not easily rebuffed.

"I told them no six or seven times," Kuhn said.

Kuhn won the state 800-meter title in 1 minute, 50.91 seconds to rank 14th in the nation, according to dyestat.com. He became Shelbyville's first boys state champion in a running event since 1931, and he won at the Midwest Meet of Champions in 1:51.52.

He hadn't run track since eighth grade. He played baseball all spring — and led the Hoosier Heritage Conference with a .408 batting average — so his training was limited. Or, rather, non-existent.
