South Side Indoor Track and Field Project Back on Track

During the winter months, coach Heraldo Morrison takes his four dozen grade school and high school students, members of the Saints Track Club, to the South Side YMCA, where they run laps and train for competitions.

In the summer, the non-profit track club, with students ages 7 to 17 from across the city, trains at the outdoor track at Jackson Park, the future site of the Obama presidential library.

Without a public indoor facility available anywhere in Chicago, the team has tried practicing at the two-lane leisure track at the Salvation Army's Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in the West Pullman neighborhood. But there are membership fees there. Morrison has even considered space at local universities, but they require memberships, too.

"We've been struggling to find a place to practice," he said.
