[Men's Cross Country] Cross Country places 18 of 34 teams at the NAIA Preview at Rim RockPublished by
LAWRENCE, KS -- The Spring Arbor University Men's Cross Country Team competed at Rim Rock Farms this weekend finishing 18th out of 30 teams. The Kansas course had its ups and downs, quite literally, as it featured a multitude of accents and descents in terrain. In the words of senior runner Kam Mills it was "a man's course." Kyle Anderson led the Spring Arbor squad, finishing in eighth place with a time of 25:20. Kyle spoke to the team after the race saying, "If there is any word that comes out of today, it is hope." He indeed ran with hope, as he led the race for the first two miles, including a 4:49 first mile. His brother Nathan Anderson also did the family proud. Nathan was the next cougar to cross the line with a 27:33 and placing 122nd overall. Tyler Babinec closely followed Nathan, placing 124th and running a 27:38. Next for the Cougars was Simon Reidsma, finishing in 138th place and 27:50. Daniel Garza rounded out the top five with a 143rd place finish and a 27:53. The difficulty of the course was reflected by Spring Arbor's times, and Head Coach Dante Ottolini challenged his team to focus on the small successes rather than the finishing times. For example, he mentioned, "At the mile we had a mob of guys come in at 5:10," commented Ottolini. "It was sweet to see. That is one of the little things we have to look at despite the fact that the times weren't great." Another highlight in the race was the success of the Aquinas College Men's team, who finished first overall. Spring Arbor and Aquinas shared a bus for the Kansas trip. Spring Arbor sophomore Simon Reidsma spoke about the experience; "We had a great time traveling down with the Aquinas team and it was an excellent chance to form relationships between the programs. I especially enjoyed doing a joint cool down with their team." Kyle's theme of hope also applies to the remainder of Spring Arbor's season. They welcomed the Rim Rock race as an opportunity to preview the NAIA national's course. Whether or not they will be running in the nationals meet is yet to be determined, and Coach Ottolini speculated about this subject after the race. "If you want to come back, you have to be looking forward to one race...I believe in each one of you," said Ottolini. That race is the Crossroads League Championship, scheduled to take place on November 9, at Grace College in Indiana. Spring Arbor is currently ranked fourth in the league. However, Kam Mills is not worried about the rankings and shared his thoughts with the team; "In my experience, it has meant nothing when we were ranked first in the League. It really comes down to that one race." Before that race is the next race the Cougars will compete in, which is the NAIA Great Lakes Challenge in Grand Rapids, MI on Saturday, October 26. The race will begin at approx. 11:00 am. Read the full article at: www.saucougars.com
