2013 USTFCCCA Cross Country All-America Honors Awarded for Division IBy Kyle Terwillegar, USTFCCCA November 25, 2013 NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Monday the 80 student-athletes who earned All-America honors by finishing among the top 40 of the 2013 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships men’s and women’s races. All-America Archive Led by a nation-best four All-Americans, Colorado’s men claimed their third national crown in the past decade with a 149-169 victory over runner-up Northern Arizona. In his first NCAA Championships, Ben Saarel led the Buffaloes with an eighth-place overall finish, while sophomore Morgan Pearson (17th), senior Blake Theroux (23rd) and sophomore Pierce Murphy (39th) rounded out the team’s All-Americans. The Buffaloes’ team score of 149 was the highest ever for a men’s Division I NCAA Champion cross country team. Runner-up Northern Arizona placed three on the All-America list in fourth-place sophomore Futsum Zienasellassie, junior Matt McElroy (25th) and senior Brian Shrader (28th). Third-place Oklahoma State and fourth-place BYU each earned two All-America honors to round out the podium, as did 14th-place Texas and 18th-place Villanova. In the women’s race, the Providence trio of senior Emily Sisson (seventh), senior Laura Nagel (27th) and sophomore Sarah Collins earned All-American honors for the second year in a row to lead the Friars to their first-ever NCAA women’s cross country title over Arizona, 141-197. Providence was the only women’s team in the nation with three All-America honorees. Behind senior Elvin Kibet (15th) and junior Nicci Corbin (22nd), Arizona finished runner-up as one of five teams with two All-Americans. Tenth-place New Mexico, 11th-place Stanford, 13th-place Iowa State and 16th-place Dartmouth — led by individual champion Abbey D’Agostino — were the other teams with pairs of All-Americans. By conference, the Pac-12 boasted seven All-Americans in both the men’s and women’s races to claim top honors for both genders. Individual champion Edward Cheserek of Oregon dethroned 2012 champion Kennedy Kithuka of Texas Tech in the men’s race in his first NCAA Championships to lead the conference, joined by Colorado’s nation-best four honorees, Stanford junior Jim Rosa (fifth) and Washington junior Aaron Nelson (20th). The Big 12 was next in the men’s race with six honorees, and the Big Ten followed after that with four. The Pac-12 posted four top-10 individuals in the women’s race, led by fourth-place Stanford junior Aisling Cuffe. Junior Shelby Houlihan of Arizona State (eighth), senior Shalaya Kipp of Colorado (ninth) and junior Kelsey Santisteban of California (10th) rounded out the top 10. Cuffe’s senior teammate Jessica Tonn was 16th to join Arizona’s pair as the other Pac-12 honorees. Next in line with six All-Americans was the ACC, followed by the Big East with five, led by Providence’s trio. The Big 12 and Ivy League, headlined by D’Agostino’s title, both finished with four apiece. National Athletes and Coaches of the Year will be announced Tuesday.
