Comments

SPRING ARBOR, MI – It takes an extraordinary amount of self-discipline to train your body to run long distances.  For most, it takes an equal amount of self-discipline to study and train your brain to achieve outstanding grades at the collegiate level.  For the SAU Men's and Women's Cross Country teams, they exemplify the 'student' in Student-Athlete.

According to the 2013 NAIA Cross Country Scholar Athlete list, Spring Arbor University men's and women's teams combined tied for the highest number of Scholar Athletes in the Nation with 16 Cougars making the list.  The Women's team led the nation with 10 on the list while the guys tied for the third highest number with six.

Making the list for the women's team was Christina Anderson, Katrina Bean, Elizabeth Bradt, Amanda Curtis, Leah DeVoe, Rebecca Donker, Danae Dracht, Faith Gunderson, Kathryn Jones, and Alison Kiekover.  The men making the list included Kyle Anderson, Chris Conrad, Livingston Garland, Nick Haskamp, Noah Haverdink, and Peter Ramundo.

In order to be named an NAIA Scholar Athlete, a student must be a full-time student-athlete and be a junior or senior in good standing and achieve a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.5 or higher.

Spring Arbor's 16 Student-Athletes tied Olivet Nazarene University (IL) who had 11 men and five women make the list for the Tigers.

In the Crossroads League, the Cougars topped all school in the league with Indiana Wesleyan coming in second place with 12 (3 men, 9 women), Goshen College was third with eight (4 men, 4 women), Bethel College (3 men, 2 women) and Huntington (1 man, 4 women) was next with five.  Taylor University had four Scholar Athletes (1 man, 3 women), and Mount Vernon Nazarene had three with two men and one women making the list.
