[Men's Indoor Track & Field] Cougar Track & Field place 7th in NCCAA National Championships

Comments

MARION, IN – Senior Cougar Nathan Martin stole the show at the 2013 NCCAA National Indoor Championships held on the campus of Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, IN over the weekend.  Martin ran the 5000m on Friday night and led all 25 laps around the 200m track.  A day later, on Saturday, Martin captured the 3000m and was named the NCCAA National Championship Athlete of the Meet.

In the 5000m, from the start, Martin held off Oklahoma Christian University's Geoffrey Njonjo by just a step for the first 20 laps.  Njonjo shadowed Martin the entire way as both runners started separate themselves from the rest of the field until about lap 20 when Martin shifted into another gear that Njonjo didn't have.

On February 8, at the GVSU's Big Meet in Grand Rapids, Martin shattered SAU's 5000m record with a time of 14:11.79.  On Friday night, Martin cruised for the win with a time of 14:41.17, almost seven seconds in front of Njonjo.

Cougar teammate, Kyle Anderson who was running near the front for the entire race finished in 5th with a time of 15:11.00.  Anderson earned NCCAA All-American status for his efforts.

The 3000m was a little closer, and was more of an unknown for Martin as he was unfamiliar with many of his competitors. However, Martin captured the event setting a new Spring Arbor University record with a time of 8:17.16

The two first place finishes for Martin earned 20 points for Spring Arbor in the team competition and helped the Cougars finish in 7th overall with 31 teams in the event.  Spring Arbor totaled 50 points in the meet.

Other Cougars who scored for Spring Arbor were Anderson's 5th place in the 5000m run earned him four points and Anderson also finished 4th in the 3000m and earned five points in that event.

Kelly Maxwell finished 8th overall in the 60m hurdles for one point and also earned one point for a 7th seed in the prelims.

The 4x800m relay team of Andrew Guzdial, Jared Lauber, Chris Conrad, and Ian Miller finished 4th earning five points

Aaron Corey jumped the bar set at 6'3 ¼" which was good enough for a 6th place spot on the podium earning Corey three points to the till for the Cougars.

Jeremy Rogers captured an NCCAA National Championship in the Pole Vault as he set a new Spring Arbor University record with a vault of 15' 6 ¼" adding 10 more points for Spring Arbor.  Tim Canfield placed 7th in the Pole Vault with a height of 14' 6 ¼" for two points.

The Cougars will next compete at the NAIA National Championships at the Spire Institute in Geneva, OH February 28 through March 2.
