[Men's Cross Country] Devotion From the Heart of a Warriors Coach: CONTENTMENTPublished by
A WARRIOR TRAIT: Contentment Dictionary Definition: The state of being contented; satisfaction. Coach Daniells definition: Contentment or happiness comes in attaining goals. Goals help to measure progress as long as they are valuable and realistic. Striving towards a goal(s) enhances motivation and gives us a sense of direction and focus. Favorite Scripture that deals with Contentment: Philippians 4:11-12 Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. Why I chose that passage: We as society have not allowed ourselves to be content; we have equated being content with settling for less and continuing to seek more. Sometimes more is not a good thing. We as followers of Christ need to be content with whatever situation we are in and good stewards of what has been provided to us. How I apply contentment to coaching: Just because our bodies feel good after a difficult workout, does not mean we always do more. Just because our bodies can handle more miles, does not mean we go beyond the "10% rule" with increasing mileage on a weekly basis. By doing "one more" can lead to injury, over-training or burnout. With running, we have to look at every workout with a specific purpose in mind for not just one day, but the affects it can have over the entire season. By reevaluating our goals individually and as a team, it keeps us focused and on a path of success athletically, academically, spiritually and in our personal lives. How I apply contentment to life An identity defined by optimal goals not only grounds us in what we do and how other people think and feel about us, but also focuses us on what we know to be true and important in life. That is different for each of us, but it is a possible reality for all of us. Meet the Coach: Parker Daniells begins his 5th year as the Head Cross Country/ Track & Field Coach. Coach Daniells has had great success through local high schools and running clubs and 15 years of competitive running through middle school to now. Parker's success at the high school level has resulted in multiple trips to Sections, Masters, and California State Meet. For four years, Parker had been an athlete for both the Cross Country and Track teams at WJU. During his time at WJU, Parker received first team all-conference four times, two team conference titles, and a trip to the National meet in Wisconsin. Coach Daniells has had great success in the short amount of time he has been a coach with the Warriors by leading 11 Men's All-Conference Awards, 5 Women's All-Conference Awards and 7 NAIA Academic Scholar Athletes. Parker's Men's team won the California Pacific Conference Finals in 2011 and 2012, while Coach Parker received 2011 and 2012 Men's Conference Coach of the Year.
