FSU's Makusha selected for NCAA track meet

Forget those other stories from the past few days. They don't matter now. This story is the one that is truly accurate. Honest.

Florida State star sophomore long jumper Ngoni Makusha, the defending national champion in the event, will be competing in the NCAA Championship track meet after all.

On Friday night, after Makusha struggled at the NCAA East Regional in Greensboro, N.C., FSU head coach Bob Braman thought the Zimbabwe native was "definitely" out of nationals.

On Monday, when he saw the results from the other three regionals around the country, Braman realized that Makusha would likely be the sixth and final at-large selection for the event, which routinely has 26 competitors at the national meet (with 20 automatic qualifiers).

On Tuesday, when the NCAA start lists were released, Braman quickly noticed that the long jump had just 25 participants and his star sophomore wasn't one of them.

"I'm at a loss to explain that one," he said later that day.

Then came Thursday. And the chairperson of the NCAA track and field committee called Braman to inform him that they leave "three to four spots open (out of a maximum number of 544 per gender) for injury purposes" and that Makusha had been selected to fill one of those spots.

It was good — and surprising — news for the head coach and his Olympian.
