FSU's Williams steps up to NCAA title in long jumpPublished by
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — She was down to her final jump. After faulting on her first two attempts, Florida State sophomore Kim Williams had to land a qualifying mark on her third attempt to advance to the finals. She did more than qualify. She won the national championship. And she gave the FSU women 10 big points toward their goal of winning the outdoor national title on Day 2 of the NCAA championship meet. Her jump of 6.54 meters (21 feet, 51/2 inches) tied with San Diego State's Karoline Koehler and Oregon's Jamesha Youngblood for the best mark of the meet. But Williams' second-best distance of 6.35 – which came on her final jump – was better than the second-best jumps of both Koehler and Youngblood. And so Williams was awarded first place and her first outdoor national title. "I found out that I won when I came into the media zone," said Williams, who won the indoor triple jump national championship earlier this season. "I just knew I had to get a good mark for second-best." Williams wasn't the only sophomore long jumper from FSU to win a national title on Thursday. Ngoni Makusha, the defending champion, won the men's event with a jump of 26-7 ¼. NCAA meet officials said it's just the second time a program has swept the men's and women's long jump events at the same meet. "It was a good day," FSU jumps coach Dennis Nobles said with a laugh.
