FSU's Makusha repeats in long jump at NCAAsPublished by
FSU's Makusha repeats in long jump at NCAAs FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — And that's why Florida State head coach Bob Braman wanted Ngoni Makusha to compete in the NCAA Championships. The sophomore long jumper, who was the 26th — and last — at-large invitee in the event, flew past the competition on Friday in Fayetteville, Ark. to win his second straight individual national championship. "It's such a blessing to be here," Makusha said. "To win here, it's like God is doing favors for me. It's just great. It's awesome."
Makusha, who has been slowed by a strained quad muscle for all of the outdoor season, finished 12th at the NCAA East Regional in Greensboro, N.C.
For most of the next week, Braman stressed about whether Makusha would be invited to the national meet. Eventually, they were informed by the NCAA Track and Field committee that it had reserved a spot for Makusha (one of four such spots for the entire men's meet, regardless of event) in the field. "It was like a roller-coaster," said Makusha, whose longest jump of the season coming into the meet was 7.73 meters. "But I was just ready for anything. I told myself if I get in there, I'm going to give it my best." His best turned out to be unbeatable. The Zimbabwe native, who finished fourth in the Olympics last summer, went out and obliterated his season-best mark on Friday.
